Toru Kubota
Documentary Filmmaker
Born in 1996. His first film Light up Rohingya (2016) shed light on the Rohingya internment camps in western Myanmar, which shaped his path toward telling stories from the margins. He has since worked with BBC, NHK World, and Al Jazeera. During the pandemic, he co-directed NHK’s Tokyo Ritornello (2020), which shed light on overlooked immigrant communities in Japan. In 2022, he was detainedby the Myanmar junta in 2022 while filming anti-military protests in Yangon.
